Originally a village of lumberjacks and farmers, Le Chesnay belonged to the parish of Rocquencourt until 1683, when Louis XIV bought it to add to the park of Versailles. In 2019, the two towns will merge to form a new commune: Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt. This new territory boasts a number of historic buildings to discover thanks to walking trails devised by the town's Cercle Historique: the châteaux of Grand Chesnay, Bellevue, Haut Bel-Air and Rocquencourt; the two former town halls; the churches of Saint-Germain and Notre-Dame de la Résurrection; and the Voluceau estate.
