Located on the Mantois plateau, Goupillères marks its northern boundary with the Rambouillet forest massif. Its name comes from the Latin Vulpes meaning "wolf" - a reference to the many foxes in its woods. In the 15th century, the village belonged successively to the Villeneuve family, lords of Noisy and Bailly, then to the Vitry family, lords of La Bretesche, and finally to the Paillard family, lords of Jumeauville. In the 17th century, the territory became a marquisate after its purchase by Jean-François Lecoq, a member of Louis XIV's Parliament. He is credited with the creation of the village's first school in 1674.
