At the meeting point of two valleys and two rivers, Dampierre takes its name from the Latin Domus Petri (House of Peter), in reference to the 13th-century church of Saint-Pierre, built in the village. The town is also known to motorcyclists for its mythical Côte des Dix-Sept Tournants. The town is also home to other treasures: The Second Empire white marble Virgin and Child in the church and the Iron House, used at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1889, which today welcomes hikers.
