A small commune in Gironde, Porchères has a very long history, with occupation dating back to prehistoric times. A flint weighing over 10 kg (known as a "gigantolite"), found in Porchères, is on display at the Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux. The Greenwich meridian runs through the village on a north-south line. When in Porchères, a visit to the Moulin du barrage is a must. The site has been open to visitors since 2016: between activities, tours, workshops and a guinguette, there's plenty to do all day. The site has been awarded the Natura 2000 and Man and Biosphere labels by Unesco.
