Populated by a little over 5,000 inhabitants, Mériel bordered the left bank of Oise and the forest of L 'Isle-Adam, and lies at the limit of the Stors marshes, a site where fauna and flora are rich. Several kings went there and housed in the Abbey of the Val. The latter, the first, exploded the quarries of the surrounding stones from the xiith century. Today, quarries will be used to build the Sorbonne and the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris.
