Traditionally called Guy, the lords of La Roche gave their name to the place. Nestled deep in the cliffs of troglodytic dwellings, the château dates back to the Viking incursions of the early 10th century. It is crowned by a 12th-century keep. From its summit, the breathtaking view reveals a strategic position on the Franco-Norman border. The French-style kitchen garden, the town hall, the forest and its arboretum are also not to be missed. Today, La Roche-Guyon, a peaceful commune of around 500 inhabitants on the border with Normandy, has been awarded the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" label, and well deserves it.
