The first inhabitants settled here about 5,000 years ago, during the Neolithic. A major Gallo-Roman village then developed, mentioned in texts of the seventh century. In the Middle Ages, its abbey becomes an important economic hub on the Seine. On his slopes, then, vines grow: They give a white wine appreciated in Paris. From the nineteenth century, competition from the wines of the Midi and urbanization caused them to disappear - however, vine feet were replanted in 1997. As industries begin to settle in this period, Argenteuil is frequented by Parisians who like to relax by the water. One of his high figures is Claude Monet, who lived there eight years, and we can still see the house. Located near the landscapes that inspired Impressionist painters, Saint-Denys Basilica houses a «saint tunic». Today, Argenteuil has more than 110,000 inhabitants, a record figure for the city, placing it at the fourth regional rank, after Paris of course, but right behind Boulogne-Billancourt and Saint-Denis.
