The town of Gentilly is located on the Cours River, this river flowing under ground to the Seine, at the level of the Austerlitz bridge. The city owes it part of its development with the introduction of laundry and tannery activities in the th century. Some of its neighbourhoods have preserved the charm of these suburbs that has been able to capture a famous native of Gentilly, the photographer Robert Doisneau. This popular town bordering Paris is now close to 17 000 inhabitants, spread over a small territory with a surface area of barely 1 km 2 (1,18 km 2 exactly).
