Contrary to popular belief, Moulis does not derive from the Latin molinis, meaning "mill", but from moles, meaning "earthwork or masonry". The site has been inhabited for a very long time, as attested by the discovery of the remains of a 1st-century villa and an early Christian chapel. While its fortified Romanesque church, which preserves rare stoup stones and a tombstone of Pey Berland's mother, is well worth a visit, it's also for its wines. Moulis is the smallest Médoc appellation in terms of surface area - 610 ha in an 8 km strip - representing 4% of the total Médoc vineyard.
