Founded by Éléonore de Provence in 1265, Monségur has retained its covered square and checkerboard layout. Its name, from the Latin mons securus, means "the safe mountain". Indeed, the town is perched on a hill, and a lovely covered walkway runs around the ramparts, offering a view over the valley. The town as a whole remains picturesque, with its ancient streets, half-timbered houses and 15th-century Governor's Tower. Its Notre-Dame church, typical of bastide churches, dates back to the late 13th century and features a perfect harmony between Gothic chapels and a 19th-century neo-Gothic nave. Also worth a visit is the glass and cast-iron hall.
