The village's toponym refers to its distant origins, with "nant-" meaning "valley" in Celtic, and "Lès" (near) indicating its proximity to Meaux. Although the village is mentioned in the 7th century, a Roman road linking Boulogne-sur-Mer and Rome ran through it before that time. But the history of Nanteuil is above all linked to the Reformation. "The first Protestant temple in France was built here, in the hamlet of Chermont. Destroyed after the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685, which revoked the Edict of Nantes, it was replaced in 1827 by another building now used by the United Protestant Church.
