We find traces of a Latin name Villa que vocatour Mauressart from the end of the Roman Empire which will evolve into Moressart, Morissarte, Morecerf and finally Mortcerf. We also know that essart comes from the verb 'essarter' which means 'to clear the land for cultivation', and that the term mort, of Indo-European origin, means marsh. It is therefore considered that the origin of the name Mortcerf is due to its marshy origin having been cleared. Mortcerf, therefore, does not mean that deer come to die! Besides, this village is very much alive! A weekly market is held in the centre of the village on Friday mornings, with a new take-away food stall also present in the village on Thursday evenings, with paella, couscous, sauerkraut and tartiflette for different pleasures, without forgetting the roast chickens with a fragrant scent in the surroundings! Trade remains alive with a bakery, a hairdresser (in this case a hairdresser, Charline), a bar-brasserie-tabac-press and food-trucks. You can download the little magazine entitled Notre village which keeps you informed of local news and achievements from the town hall's website - www.mortcerf.fr
