Moissy is said to have come from messis (harvest), indicating an ancient agricultural vocation from the earliest times, as elsewhere in the Brie region. Until the 17thcentury , the commune was called Moissy-l'Evesque, as it belonged to the bishops of Paris before being ceded to the lord of Cramayel in 1643. A number of monuments bear witness to the town's past, including the Pyramide, an 18th-century obelisk erected on the site of the former Château de Cramayel, the Monument Historique church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption and the 19th-century Château de Lugny, transformed into a Thai pagoda and home to over 400 golden Buddhas in a park planted with trees.
