Germigny-l'Évêque, whose name comes from the Latin germinius, germiniacum, germinacus or germinu vicus, is first mentioned in 1180. As for "l'Évêque", it appeared when the village became the residence of the bishops of Meaux. These churchmen were not the only ones to spend time here. Saint Louis stayed here around 1253, as did Philippe le Bel in May 1305 and August 1309. The commune is home to two listed historic buildings: the pleasure garden and park of the summer palace of the bishops of Meaux, and the 18th-century Brie pleasure house of Baron Ménager, with its estate known as Les Terrasses.
