In the 12th century, Fontainebleau was an imperial hunting town. The town flourished and became royal under Francis I , while the château was transformed into a veritable palace. The proximity of the Court attracted a large population, with nobles building large, beautiful mansions around the royal residence. Fontainebleau is also a city of horses, with a long equestrian tradition linked to its past thanks to the various sovereigns with a passion for riding and venery, and to the presence of the military equestrian sports center. The forest completes the story of this exceptional tourist site, with its 25,000 hectares.
