If the name of this commune, which is made up of two ancient parishes - Claye and Souilly - refers to a very ancient occupation, the first written mentions do not predate the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, its territory included a priory, two seigneuries and a castle. Its distant past is attested by the discovery of prehistoric tools near the Grosbois farm and by Gallo-Roman remains near the Mauperthuis housing estate. Claye-Souilly is above all a charming town with its rivers, its Buffon park, its "Papillon de la Prée" park and of course the Ourcq canal and the nearby regional forest.
