Although the name of this commune, which was formed from two former parishes - Claye and Souilly - refers to a very ancient occupation, the first written references to it date back no further than the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, its territory included a priory, two seigneuries and a castle. Its distant past is attested to by the discovery of prehistoric tools near the Grosbois farm and Gallo-Roman remains near the Mauperthuis housing estate. Above all, Claye-Souilly is a charming town with its rivers, its Buffon park, its "Papillon de la Prée" park and, of course, the Ourcq canal and the nearby regional forest.
