the "Bethlehem of modern painting" is how Jules Breton (1827-1906), a peasant painter, described Barbizon, admittedly exaggeratedly. It's no less true that the place was an important hotbed of pre-impressionist and colorist painting, on a par with Auvers-sur-Oise or Villiers-sur-Morin near Crécy-la-Chapelle. This small hamlet of lumberjacks belonged to the commune of Chailly-en-Bière. The 1820s saw the arrival of the first painters disappointed by the academicism of the capital: Corot, Caruelle d'Aligny, Huet, then Diaz de la Peña, Daumier and Millet. An art village, Barbizon is a must-see on your visit to the region.
