A confluence of rivers, land and people, Libourne is a royal bastide born in 1270 at the instigation of King Henry III of England. Situated at the confluence of the Isle and Dordogne rivers, the city has long occupied a strategic position. Sometimes an ally, sometimes a rival, Bordeaux's goddaughter has seen many periods of development. Founded in 1268 by Edward I, the town boasts a port, a natural outlet for the wines of the Dordogne valley. Leyburn is one of the most prosperous bastides in Aquitaine. Less than half an hour from Bordeaux and an hour from the ocean beaches, Libourne is a prime tourist destination.
