Fountain in the heart of the square, erected in 1844 and designed by Louis Visconti at the request of Louis-Philippe
The Louvois fountain faces the Bibliothèque nationale Richelieu, amid lawns and trees. Erected in 1844, the fountain was designed by Louis Visconti at the request of Louis-Philippe. Its basin is surmounted by two basins, between which are four sculpted women representing the Seine, Loire, Garonne and Saône rivers. Beneath the lower basin are four tritons riding dolphins. Finally, around the rim of the large marble basin, the 12 signs of the Zodiac are sculpted.

The fountain which celebrates four large rivers and rivers of France adorns this square with great success. This little corner of greenery in the dense central Paris is very pleasant. Especially since the façade of the BNF was plastered!
