Ville d'Avray, with close to 11 000 inhabitants, is known for its ponds and for its wooded environment. For proof, it is the only commune of the small crown in which one must take a forest path to reach a nearby commune, namely Viroflay! In the th century, the city took advantage of its proximity to the Château de Versailles: its forest is maintained for royal hunts, roads are arranged. The Lord of Ville-d'Avray built a castle and a church. Painter Corot immortalized his country's atmosphere. In the cemetery is the writer Boris Vian (1920-1959), a native of the city.
