It is the Latin phrase Mons rubeus that gave its name to the town in 1194 (in the form Rubeo Monte), because of the color of the clay and reddish soil that was found there in places ... Originally, the town had two agglomerations: Grand Montrouge (the current town) and Petit Montrouge (annexed to Paris in 1860). At the beginning of the 20th century, the city developed with industrial activities. A hundred years later, it was reoriented towards the service sector. Among the most famous personalities that the town has seen growing up, the famous humorist Coluche who, as a child, had lived at 5 rue Emile-Boutroux
