The motto of the city is Curva via mens recta (Curved path, straight mind). This Gallo-Roman road must have passed through the present-day Place Victor-Hugo. Today, however, it is difficult to imagine this city as a former village of fishermen and wine growers. From the end of the 19th century, it became an industrial city: automobile and chemical factories, body shops, perfume factories, food industries and pharmaceutical products. The Second World War and its bombings disfigured what remained of the old village. In the 1950s and 1960s, the creation of the La Défense district changed the fate of the city forever.
