The name of the city comes from the Latin word "clippiacum", according to the name of a character named Cleppius. In the th century, the parish of Clichy encompasses a large territory stretching up to the Louvre. The area of the city will decline during the following centuries until it acquires its definitive limits in 1930. In the th century, the main activity was laundry, and then Clichy became industrializes from the th century, while concervant areas dedicated to vegetable crops. The municipality now has 56 000 inhabitants and has embarked on a vast redevelopment campaign and the reorganisation of new neighbourhoods, such as that of the Banks of Seine.
