The origin of the city's name comes from a fortified farmhouse dating back to the 12th century, Castellio (derived from a Latin word for "small castle"). The fiefdom, originally owned by the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, was transferred in 1597 to the king's adviser, Richard Tardieu. During the 17th and 18th centuries, wealthy Parisians had their summer residences built in the image of the Folie Desmares, bought by the banker Hogguer for the actress Charlotte Desmares. Originally rural, the city will diversify its activities with the exploitation of its subsoil (sand, gypsum, limestone). The winch located on rue Ampère is one of the vestiges of this activity, which extended over nearly 75% of the municipality's territory, between ten and forty metres underground. The War of 1870 and the Commune had a profound impact on Châtillon, which was then partially destroyed. Urbanization was in full swing after the First World War. Quarries were replaced by mushroom farms and the first industries were established, notably the Brandt factory. Nowadays, there are many tertiary activities in the city. Gradually, the rural houses gave way to suburban pavilions and the first buildings, making Châtillon a real city. Today, with a total area of 292 ha, the municipality has more than 37,000 inhabitants, a figure that is constantly increasing. Finally, note that the city is particularly well served by transport: metro line 13 and tramway line T6. Within a few years, the city will also be crossed by the "supermetro" of line 15, whose gigantic works are progressing at a fast pace.
