The name of the city comes from the Latin castanetum - indicating the presence of chestnut trees - and from the place called Malabry, deformation of the word mal-abri, hunting place beaten by the winds. In the 20th century, the large local landowners became nurserymen and arborists. Close to Paris, the commune gradually adopted a residential character while preserving beautiful green spaces (nearly 30% of the territory is considered rural). Several writers have resided in the area, including Voltaire, Chateaubriand and Eugène Sue. The city is also home to the École Centrale de Paris, and is crossed by the green corridor of Southern Paris, one of the city's lungs.
