What a pretty name! The municipality stretches along the green valley of the Orge. The keep, classified as a Historic Monument in 1923, marks the centre of the city and recalls the old medieval castle of the 11th century. The Genovefans know little about it, but the name of the city comes from the legend that Saint Genevieve brought forth a miraculous spring in 448. A former rural town, its development corresponds to the arrival of the railway at the end of the 19th century. Subdivisions are developed in an urban planning that radiates from the station. In 1963, France's first supermarket was built there, and on the other side of the Ile-de-France, the commercial area is one of the most important in France. The city, also known for hosting white Russians during the Bolshevik revolution, has a population of nearly 36,000.
