The Saclay plateau and its wooded hillsides dominate this town of over 34,000 inhabitants, a third of whose surface area is still considered rural. The town's history began with the construction of a small castle for Childebert I, known as palatolium in Latin, which gave its name to the commune. Later, Queen Bathilde, wife of Clovis II, settled here with her son, Clotaire III. In the center of Palaiseau, on the Place de la Victoire, stands the statue of the little drummer Joseph Bara, the young hero of the Revolution who was born here. The Ecole Polytechnique has been based here since its move from the Latin Quarter in Paris.
