Crossed by a tributary of the Garonne, Léognan is located in the Graves region (the name of the soil that covers the land). The vineyards here are 2,000 years old, making them the oldest in Bordeaux. Its red and white wines, which belong to the young Pessac-Léognan appellation created in 1987, have a fine aptitude for ageing. A number of illustrious châteaux are worth a visit: Haut-Brion, Pape Clément, Carbonnieux - an early 17th-century château built by Asdrubal de Ferron - and Olivier - a small castel rebuilt in the 16th century, surrounded by a moat and restored in 1845 by architect Louis Garros.
