The name Moigny could come from the name of a Gallic chief Monius or from monios (traveler), or from moniacum (monk) or from magny, from the Latin mansionile (small inn). The village received the name of Moigny in 1793, while the addition of l'Ecole (the river) dates from 1970. Its territory has been occupied since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the Roche Grénolée polishing stone in the Tartibois woods. But it is only in the Middle Ages that Moigny developed as shown by the vestiges of its motte castrale and its church Saint-Denis of the XIIIth and XIVthcenturies . We will also see mills, wells and wash houses testifying to the importance of water in the history of the village.
