Courances certainly owes its name to the presence of several living springs in the area. In the 13th century, the village came into the possession of Henri de Courances, one of the first marshals of France, and was then successively the seigneury of Cosme Clausse, the Gallards, the Potier de Novion and Charles Aymon de Nicolay. Joan of Arc stopped here on her way to Sully-sur-Loire. Famous figures such as Henri IV, Louis XIII and Marshal Montgomery stayed here from 1950 to 1957. The village boasts a superb 17th-century château, with fine Louis XIII furnishings, and above all a beautiful park with numerous water features.
