Before becoming Corbeil-Essonnes in 1951, Corbeil and Essonnes were two distinct cities. Corbeil, a Gallo-Roman city, a defensive castle of the Seine in the Middle Ages and then a royal city since 1120, and Essonnes, an important industrial city on the route of Paris, were very early in their economic and demographic development, benefiting from the presence of the Seine and Essonne. The first will to merge the two communes would have been mentioned in the grievance book in 1789. In 1946, the prefect asked the mayors of the two cities to reflect on a rapprochement, which began on 9 August 1951. Corbeil-Essonnes was born. Today, Corbeil-Essonnes, with more than 47 000 inhabitants, is the second town in the department.
