One of the first mentions of the place dates back to the preparations for the Roman invasion of England. Caesar established a camp there that history has named after the emperor. The 150 hectare opidum is still visible, but it is in private property. Later, the Templars owned his land. The municipality has always lived off what it could get from the banks of the Seine, below its cliff: salt works, fishing, livestock. The establishment of the Renault factory in 1964 gave the town a new lease of life. The car manufacturer built its factory there between the Tancarville Canal and La Seine. It should be noted that the Normandy Bridge is legally built on the territory of Sandouville. To all emperors and all honours, the Roman Camp hiking trail (7.5 km, 2 hours) starts from the Saint-Aubin church and goes down to the canal, through the woods.
