Saint-Saëns is the kind of place where it is good to stroll along the streets and the banks of the Varenne. The town is said to take its name from an Irish monk, Saen, who can be translated as "Jean". It is he who, in the year 675, founded a monastery on the banks of the Varenne, on the edge of the forest of Eawy. Little by little, the monastery attracted the population, which eventually formed the village. Today, it is a pretty village with its brick houses and its central square, whose speciality is the "Saint-Saëns cabbage", an ancient variety that can weigh up to 20 kg. The commune has a famous golf course, created around the Château du Vaudichon
