A land of Graves on the edge of the Gironde forest, La Brède is located 18 kilometers south of Bordeaux. The birthplace and homeland of Charles-Louis de Secondat, also known as Montesquieu, La Brède nurtured the philosopher's thoughts, making him famous and his most faithful ambassador ever since. Along with the château, listed as a Monument Historique, where the writer was born, the church of Saint-Jean-d'Étampes is one of the town's outstanding landmarks. In the churchyard, which was considerably altered in the 19th century, there are several gravestones, including that of Montesquieu's grandfather, Jean de Secondat.
