The history of the Lime tree is typically Norman. Not far from Etretat, the site was accessible by the Gallo-Roman road that went as far as Juliobona (Lillebonne). The Romans had built a wall on the beach to prevent pirates from landing there. Rollon and his Vikings also settled on the lands of the Linden after 911 and Onfroy du Tilleul, companion of William the Conqueror, received as a reward the guard of Hastings Castle. Descendants of the new King of England owned the land. A fortified castle was built in Fréfossé at the end of the 14th century. Le Tilleul is now frequented for its beach, located at the bottom of the valleuse d'Antifer.
