The people of Fécampois have always sailed the distant seas in search of spices and new materials. But it was in the 16th century, when fishermen discovered cod off the coast of Newfoundland in the Canadian waters of the North Atlantic, that the town really took off. In 1872, Fécamp became the leading deep-sea fishing port, with a fleet of over a hundred boats. This fleet mainly comprised terre-neuvas, but also dundees used for herring and mackerel fishing in the English Channel.
