The commune is located at the heart of the Médoc, with its seven kilometers of frontage on the Atlantic Ocean. Before 1792, it was part of two separate parishes: Saint-Pierre-de-Grayan and Saint-Jean-l'Hôpital. The name Grayan comes either from the Roman proper name Graius, or from the Old French Grava, probably meaning "grave". As for l'Hôpital, around the 15th century it was a welcoming stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, who disembarked at Soulac and were cared for by the Hospitallers. Today, Grayan is a haven of peace for naturists, with the largest center of its kind in Europe at 335 hectares.
