The town of Fronsac has been occupied by many colorful characters. In 769, Charlemagne built a fortress on the knoll to combat the Dukes of Aquitaine (destroyed by Louis XIII in 1623). Decades later, in 1634, the duchy became the property of the Richelieu family. The Duc de Richelieu et de Fronsac built a magnificent Italianate residence on the same site. It is said that the numerous fêtes galantes served to promote Fronsac wines as far afield as the court of Versailles. It is even said that it was here that the notion of "cru" first appeared in the Libourne region.
