Cistercian abbey, with a remarkable, sober, and elegant medieval architecture, cultural events every summer.
A legend surrounds the founding of Bonport Abbey in 1189: Richard the Lionheart, Duke of Normandy and King of England, nearly drowned in the Seine. He vowed to found a monastery here if he ever made it to the other side of the river. As with all Cistercian abbeys, the sobriety and elegance of the medieval architecture are remarkable. The superbly restored chapter house, monks’ hall, dormitory, kitchens and refectory are just a few examples. The abbey hosts cultural events every summer.
