The town of Pont-de-l'Arche is located at the confluence of the Eure and Seine rivers. Its fortified bridge dates back to the founding of Normandy by the Vikings around 862, and it is protected by two forts. The town, a blend of Middle Ages and Renaissance, boasts a fine collection of historic houses, most of which date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Remains of the old fortifications, notably those built by Charles II the Bald, are still visible. It's a pleasant, lively little town, with numerous events throughout the year and its traditional market.
