Between vineyards and estuary, the town of Cussac Fort Médoc was a busy port on the Gironde until the 17th century. This fort, built by Vauban - like the citadel at Blaye - to close the estuary lock, is a Unesco World Heritage site. The book Fort Médoc, written by Michel Faure (on sale at the Fort and at the town hall), tells the tormented story of this military complex, which today contributes to the beauty of the area. The complex is well worth a visit, as are the châteaux of the Cussac vineyards, classified as Haut Médoc. The latter accounts for more than half of the commune's agricultural area. Saint-Julien is produced here.
