The Romans stayed in this "Villa Veterana" located on the old Roman road to Piedmont. Mentioned as early as 920, the village was under the control of abbeys, including that of Niedermunster, until 1522. Like the Lordship of Barr, to which it belongs, it was placed under the suzerainty of Strasbourg until the Revolution. It is worth mentioning that the 127 Grand Rue, a former bakery dating from the 17th century, has been renovated by volunteers: a symbol of village camaraderie. It is also the municipality that has the most numerous and oldest (1585-1867) sandstone wells in the canton of Obernai. All in the saddle: the Alsace vineyard bicycle route crosses it.
