The origins of Coutras go back a long way, since a fortified Roman camp was set up on the highest point of the Motte-de-Mont. The town also bears witness to an important battle in French history, fought on October 20, 1587 during the Wars of Religion. At the confluence of the Isle and Dronne rivers, the town boasts a rich historical and natural heritage, as well as numerous sites well worth a visit: the Henri IV well built in 1551, the church housing Merovingian sarcophagi, the panoramic site of Les Jourdennes where you can admire the view over the valley, the town hall and the fish pass near the dam.
