In antiquity, this municipality located halfway between Portets and Langon was called Sirione. From the terraces of Château La Tour, the view over the Garonne and the old port is magnificent. The 12th century Romanesque church, enlarged in the 18th century and rebuilt in the 19th century, retains its original apse and a curious moulded portal is decorated with quadrupeds. Inside you can see a Christ on the Cross from the 18th century and the altarpiece of the Virgin from the same period. Did you know that? Cérons gave his name to the river Ciron which used to flow into the Garonne. The Ciron separates the gravelly crests of Sauternes, Bommes and Preignac from the plateaux of Barsac and Cérons. The microclimate it creates is at the origin of the miracle of Sauternes wines. The Cérons appellation encompasses three communes : Cérons, Illats and Podensac ; and the three exclusive grape varieties of Sauternes - Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle - contribute to the complex typicity of these wines, which are very fruity, full-bodied, nervous and pleasant.
