The capital of the Eure region has a rich past: from an ancient Roman city, whose remains can still be seen along the banks of the Iton and are constantly being rediscovered by archaeologists, to a major medieval town, described in the 18th century by Madame de Sévigné as "the prettiest town in Normandy", Évreux today offers a particularly mixed picture. While some fine old buildings remain, the heart of the town center, more than 80% of which was destroyed during the Second World War, was rebuilt in the 1950s and 1960s. Recent redevelopments of the town center have further enhanced its beauty, as in the case of Place Sepmanville, which was redesigned and inaugurated at the end of 2020. You can also discover this commune by taking a stroll along the River Iton, or escape to the surrounding forests to recharge your batteries in the heart of nature. Stop off to discover the cathedral and its remarkable stained glass windows, donated by royalty and renowned for their singular hue, as well as the adjoining museum, where you can delve into the history of the town and its region. A few kilometers away, in Le Vieil-Évreux, you can admire Gallo-Roman remains on the Gisacum site and hidden treasures in the local villages. Évreux, Normandy's fifth-largest city, is just 50 minutes by train from Paris. Many people prefer to enjoy the charm of this small town while working in the capital.
