Although the town still bears traces of Gallo-Roman occupation, the history of Conches began around 1034, when the Lords of Tosny, descendants of Rollon, Duke of Normandy, inherited the fiefdom then known as Castellio, which later became Châtillon. On their way back from their pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, they stopped off at Conques-en-Rouergue, where the cult of Saint Foy was celebrated, and brought back relics of the saint. Châtillon became Conches. The lords built a defensive fortress and keep, and surrounded the town with walls. The surrounding Conches forest offers superb hiking trails.
