This pretty little town, equidistant from Bordeaux and the ocean - about 30 kilometres - owes its name to its founder: Count Roland de Castro Novo. The name of the place evolved over the centuries: Castelnéou, then Château-Neuf to finally become Castelnau, which is one of the oldest seigneuries of the Médoc. It was this same Roland de Castro Novo who, in 1108, built the castle, some of whose remains remain today, and the Saint-Jacques chapel. Also worth seeing: the washhouse of the Lords and that of Landiran and the mill of Jalles. The river Jalle de Castelnau has its source here. Beautiful walks in perspective!
