The village of Cartelègue is about ten kilometres from Blaye. The origin of its name is Latin: "quartaleuc", which means fourth mile, corresponding to the four Gallic leagues of the Roman road between Blaye and Cartelègue. The Romanesque Saint-Romain church has a 12th century façade, a 19th century Gothic bell tower and a 17th century bell. The village has other interesting heritage features. There are indeed several crosses or the statue of the Virgin in stone, in the middle of the vineyards. A windmill of the 18th century is also present, the mill of Chasserat. This name comes from the fact that the badly situated mill, on a steep terrain, had few customers. There were so few grains to grind that the rats did not even stay at the mill of "Chasserat". Finally Cartelègue enjoys a generous nature: ideal for beautiful walks.
