Blaye's origins date back to Roman times, but it was not until the Middle Ages that the town gained recognition, thanks to the Merovingians who settled here. It was in the heart of the Saint-Romain basilica that Charlemagne's nephew, the famous Roland, was buried! The remains are still visible, and many historical treasures are on display in the archaeological museum. During the Hundred Years' War, Blaye was a strategic town, lost but recaptured in 1451. In the 17th century, under the reign of Louis XIV, Vauban built the city's famous citadel. An express bus runs from Bordeaux to Blaye in around 1? hours.
